Services Sector

Competitive Advantages, rationale

Eletricity distributionAn essential component of any sustainable community is a robust Services sector.  In this sense the Services sector comprises such elements and Health, Education, Community Development, Government, Recreation and Sport and Cultural services.

The sheer size and remoteness of much of northern South Australia means by necessity that there will need to be certain communities that act as major Service centres.  It is important that the centres are equipped with the appropriate infrastructure to connect with their broader hinterland and are of sufficient size to support the provision of the full range of Services that are generally available elsewhere.

In northern South Australia, Port Augusta has emerged as the most significant regional service centre, with road connections to all parts of the region radiating out from the city.  Coober Pedy acts as the major service centre for communities in the far north of the State and Leigh Creek plays this role for communities in the far north east and Peterborough for the lower north east sector of the Board's region.

Across Australia there is a marked trend to co-location of Services as well as a greater focus on commercial sustainability.  A significant trend is the bringing together of Education and skill formation providers through networks co-ordinated by regional development boards.
