Oxiana is helping local people get jobs at its Prominent Hill mine with the launch of the Oxiana Pre-employment Training Program. Oxiana's first Pre-employment Training Program will commence on Monday 18th September at Coober Pedy TAFE.
The program will be officially opened by Oxiana General Manager Prominent Hill, Mick Wilkes and Executive Director of the Minerals Division of Primary Industry and Resources SA (PIRSA) Paul Heithersay. The opening includes program partners from TAFE South Australia, Bungala Aboriginal Corporation, the Federal Department of Workplace Relations (DEWR) and South Australia's Regional Development Australia Far North.
Oxiana is currently developing the Prominent Hill copper-gold mine, 120km southeast of Coober Pedy, which will be operational in 2008. The Oxiana Pre-Employment Training Program allows people who have never worked in the mining industry an opportunity to gain an understanding of and some skills for a job in the mining industry. There is currently an identified lack of skilled labour available to the Australian mining industry. This program is one way in which Oxiana can help secure employees and at the same time achieves its aims of employing as many local people as possible at its operations. According to Oxiana's Managing Director Owen Hegarty,
"Oxiana is delighted to partner with these organisations to initiate this innovative Pre-Employment Training Program. This program will bring benefits not only to Oxiana but to the participants, to the region and indeed to the State of South Australia."
The 60 day program will consist of 10 trainees from the regional towns of Coober Pedy, Port Augusta and Oodnadatta. The program will be run at Coober Pedy TAFE by a trainer with extensive experience in conducting similar programs at other sites. Following satisfactory completion of the Program and three weeks of work experience on site, successful trainees will receive a Nationally Accredited Metaliferrous Certificate II in Mining.
